The August meeting of the North Royalton Board of Education took place on Monday, August 12.
The Board appointed Superintendent Gregory J. Gurka, or his designee, as the Board’s Hearing Officer for all suspension hearings and expulsions.
The Board approved account 200-978B High School Class of 2023 and approved the transfer of $6,588.10 from the High School Class of 2019 Council account to the High School Student account.
A resolution was approved by the Board that authorizes the execution of the Guaranteed Maximum Price 3.1 for the new elementary school in an amount not to exceed $34,912,722.13.
School Superintendent Greg Gurka reported that “summer, for all intents and purposes, is over,” noting that they don’t go by seasons, but the school year. He talked about how the district is getting prepared for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year, which will begin on August 19. The week previous will include the new teacher orientation, convocation, and professional development day. He thanked all those who helped to get everything ready for the students and the new year. “We’re ready to go.” He also gave a brief construction update, talking about the steel beams going up at the High School. The Middle School is in the process of moving people back in with the new entrance way completed, which will make it a more secure entrance. He wished the students and staff a great new year.
The Board authorized Summer School and Safety town for the 2019-2020 school year.
An agreement to renew dental insurance with Oasis Trust (Coresource) from October 1, 2019 through September 30, 2020 was approved by the Board for dental benefits to North Royalton City Schools’ employees.
The Board approved participation with the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio for the purpose of providing inter-district services as needed for the 2019-20 school year. (Achievement Centers for Children, Hattie Larlham, Teachers of Hearing Impaired, Educational Audiologist, Teachers of Visually Impaired, Functional Low Vision Screening, Orientation & Mobility Trainer, Rehabilitation Specialist, Braillist, Braillist Aide, Braillist Clerk, OT, PT, SLP).
The Board approved participation with STEPS Educational Group for special education programs and services for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Board approved the following agreements for the 2019-2020 school year: Bellefaire JCB (Monarch School) for special education programs and services; Nexstep Educational Services for teaching and non-teaching fields services for St. Albert the Great; Music Therapy Enrichment Center (MTEC) for musical therapy services; Applewood Centers, Incorporated (Gerson School) for special education programs; McKeon Education Group for Title 1 services for Incarnate Word Academy; and PSI Affiliates, Incorporated for Title 1 services for St. Albert the Great and Assumption.

The Board approved an agreement with Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company to enroll in the Voluntary Student Accident & Sickness Insurance Program for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Board approved the trip proposal for the North Royalton High School Boys Soccer Pre-Season Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, July 20-21, 2019.
The following gifts and donations were accepted and acknowledged:
“-The North Royalton High School Choir Boosters donated a variety of services, uniform items, registration and scholarships, valued at $7,371.55 to the choir department at North Royalton High School.”
The next regular Board meeting will take place on Monday, September 9, at 7 p.m. at the Royal View Elementary School.
