The North Royalton Board of Education’s monthly School Board meeting took place on Monday, February 11. The meeting began with the singing of the National Anthem by Valley Vista fourth grade students, who will also be performing at an upcoming Lake Erie Monsters game.
The following building presentations were made:
Albion Elementary/Royal View Elementary/Valley Vista Elementary:
Over the past year and a half, staff members from these three elementary schools have been providing input on the design for the new elementary building. When it came time to have a discussion about the design of the new building’s playground, the schools brought in the students. Student council reps from the three buildings participated in the planning and design meeting.
North Royalton Middle School:
The Winter Sports Club is one example of a co-curricular activity that supports the health and wellness of its students and helps to make NRMS a great place for middle-level learners.
Don Filips and Cathy Dostal, along with many teachers, coordinate this weekly winter event for 165 students. Several students represented the club and shared the fun they are having and the impact that it is having on them as students.
North Royalton High School:
The Bowling Team was recognized, as they compete in their first year as an official varsity sport. “Many thanks to the students, parents and coach Ed Boduszek on their volunteer efforts during the past few years as they built the team from a club sport to its current status as an official varsity sport,” said Principal Sean Osborne, North Royalton High School.
School Superintendent Greg Gurka reminded residents that the State of the Schools presentation is February 26 at 7 p.m. at the High School Performing Arts Center.
The Board approved the appointment of Dr. John Kelly as delegate and Anne Reinkober as alternate for the Ohio School Board Association’s Annual Capital Conference. The conference will be held November 10-12, 2019.
The Board approved a contract with Therapy Connection, LLC. for the purpose of providing speech services for students as needed for the 2018-19 school year.
The Board approved an agreement with eSchoolView for website services effective through June 30, 2024, for a monthly fee of $496 and a one-time redesign fee of $750.
The Board approved the North Royalton High School Course Catalog for the 2019-20 school year.
The Board approved the 2019 Graduating Class Senior Capstone Project and Work/Community Service Experience Project as part of the graduation pathway.
The Board accepted the following resignations: Olivera Cvetanovic, Classified Substitute, effective January 21, 2019; Stefanie Dorrance, Middle School Teacher, effective May 31, 2019; Robert Savage, Classified Substitute, effective January 21, 2019.
The Board approved the following change of assignments:
Susan Halamek, from Clerk-Receptionist to Payroll Specialist, effective January 22, 2019, at the base salary of $41,243; Cathy Szabo, from Payroll Specialist to Clerk-Receptionist, effective January 22, 2019, at the base salary of $40,249.
The Board approved the following appointments:
Classified Employees: Olivera Cvetanovic/Cleaner/High School/effective January 22, 2019; Rosanne Kacenjar/Administrative Assistant/Central Office/effective February 1, 2019, as needed, at an hourly rate of $18.30; Robert Savage/Cleaner/Valley Vista/effective January 22, 2019.
Certified Substitutes: Elizabeth Boyer/effective February 11, 2019; Jessica Hall; Brian Sposit/effective February 5, 2019.
Classified Substitutes: Angella Hambleton/effective February 5, 2019; Abigail McElroy/Classified Substitute/effective February 11, 2019.
The Board approved the following for supplemental contracts for the 2018-19 school year or as indicated, as needed, salary on schedule: Erin Barrett, Middle School Track Coach; Michael Myers, Middle School Intramural Worker; Jason Rutkowski, Head Girls Soccer Coach/2019-20 school year.
The Board resolved, in accordance with Article 4, Section C of the collective bargaining agreement in effect between the Board of Education and OAPSE Local #231, that the probationary employment of Frederick Leonard is terminated, effective at the end of business on Friday, February 8, 2019.
The Board authorized the Treasurer to execute a locally funded initiative memorandum of understanding with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) for the North Royalton High School project. According to the legislation, “the OFCC retains a Regional Planning Coordinator (RPC) to monitor the District’s capital improvement project and to identify those items that will be co-funded and those items that will be Locally Funded Initiatives (LFI) paid for solely with local monies and unreimbursed by the OFCC (e.g. improvements to the Performing Arts Center are not co-funded by the OFCC as they do not fund such spaces).”
The Board approved parental transportation contracts (as per Revised Code Chapter 3327) for students attending schools where bus transportation is not provided, effective for the 2018-19 school year.
The Board amended the following trip proposal for the North Royalton High School Band’s Orlando, Florida – Disney World New Year’s Parade trip dates to December 29, 2019 – January 3, 2020.
The Board approved and acknowledged the following gifts and donations:
“-Daniel Langshaw of North Royalton donated $20 to be used for the North Royalton Middle
School Washington, D.C. trip.
-Walter Ohler of the Veterans Relief Organization of Ohio donated $200 towards the John
Shepherd scholarship for the North Royalton Middle School Washington, D.C. trip.
-Christopher and Jami Haley of North Royalton donated $500 to be used for the North
Royalton Middle School Washington, D.C. trip.
-The Houshor family of North Royalton donated five family games, valued at approximately
$30, to Valley Vista Elementary.
-Daniel Smego of Parma donated $250 to the North Royalton High School baseball program.
-Mike and Charlene Cesa of North Royalton donated $50 to the North Royalton High School
baseball program.
-The Valley Vista Elementary PTA donated a sensory floor, learning lounge and chrome books, valued at $9,000, to Valley Vista Elementary.”
The next regular Meeting will be held on March 11, at 7 p.m.
