The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce recently released the 2024 Ohio School Report Cards. These report cards are designed to provide feedback using State Tests and End of Course Exams for measurement purposes.
According to District officials:
Overall Rating: The Overall rating is calculated by a weighted formula of all other rated components.
Achievement: The Achievement Component measures students academic achievement using each level of performance on Ohio’s State Tests and End of Course Exams.
Progress: The Progress Component measures the academic performance of students compared to expected growth on Ohio’s State Tests and End of Course Exams.
Gap Closing: The Gap Closing Component shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for our students in English language arts, math, and graduation. It also measures how schools are doing in supporting English learners to increase language proficiency, reducing chronic absenteeism for all students, and identifying gifted students and providing gifted services.
Graduation: The Graduation Component is a measure of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate.
Early Literacy: The Early Literacy Component is a measure of reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade based on diagnostic assessments and the Ohio State Test for English Language Arts in grade 3. *Please note that this score encompasses a data error submitted last year that is impacting this year’s score.

North Royalton School Superintendent Mike Laub stated that the administration works hard with the teachers “to do the right things based on what we see data-wise.” He went on to say that “data should be used to improve, not to prove and I understand that accountability is important and I respect that. I’ve always been a fan of a multi-tiered approach to accountability, where we take more than one snapshot on one day in a setting where we would never really ever test a kid in, and use that to measure whether or not things are going well. I think this is a snapshot of one time-one day, but I think how we use data and how we target helping kids on a daily basis – it’s important for people to know that. The state report card is what it is. I think I would encourage people too, to look at the quality report. I think it is a more robust picture of who we are and what we do with kids.”
In Cuyahoga County, Bay Village, Beachwood, Brecksville-Broadview Hts., Fairview Park, Mayfield, Rocky River, Strongsville, Chagrin Falls Exempted Village, Cuyahoga Heights, Orange and Solon all received the highest overall rating of five stars.
