As with every spring, the City turns its sight to maintenance of the road infrastructure. This year is no different with the 2025 Road Maintenance Program. Every year, the City develops a plan of the roads that are in the most need and sets a budget to complete those projects. Motorists might want to take note, as a change in travel plans may be in order.
At the March 4 Council meeting, the bid of JD Striping and Services was approved as the lowest and best bid, for an amount not to exceed $105,070.80. The bid of Independence Cement LLC was adopted as the lowest and best bid, as well as Crossroads Asphalt Recycling, Incorporated.
This year, the City has budgeted $1,861,733 for road reconstruction. That amount does include $325,778 for State Road sidewalks with a possible $200,000 grant. Of the total, $680,955 is set for the estimated total cost of paving Akins Road and $950,000 is set for the estimated total cost for paving Abbey Road, which, according to Antoskiewicz, will be done when the sewer work is completed. Additional funding for both of those projects through $250,000 grants, each, comes from an agreement with Cuyahoga County from the Cuyahoga Council 2025-26 50/50 Funding Program. Also included in the grant from Cuyahoga County is $160,000 for asphalt and concrete repairs, which is done by the City’s Service Department. An additional $255,000 has been set aside for these expenditures. Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz stated that he does “plan to doing more,” but has to wait for Council approval.
In 2024, the following streets were completed: Sharon Lane, Milan Court, Dennis Court, Douglas Court and East End Drive. He pointed out that East End Drive connects to Vista Drive, that was done last year and completes that section of the city. Those streets were treated with an asphalt overlay.
For motorists, in addition to Akins and Abbey Roads, there are other areas of the city to possibly avoid, due to construction projects: According to the City’s Facebook post, “the Turnpike will be re-decking the bridge on State Road between the Valley Parkway and Akins Road this year. This project is anticipated to begin April 1 and will wrap up in November. In addition to replacing the deck, the structure is being widened to allow proper 5-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. (The City is looking at funding opportunities to extend this sidewalk on State). Access to residents will be maintained throughout the project. Local traffic will be able to utilize Valley Parkway and Akins Road to move over to Ridge Road.”
Also, many North Royalton motorists use Wallings Road to access I-77. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation District 12, “Wallings Road bridge over I-77 & the I-77 south ramps at Wallings Road. The road closed on Monday, April 7, for approximately one year. Work will completely replace and widen the bridge and reconfigure the ramps. Detour will utilize Pleasant Valley Road.”
