The biggest news of January 1974 was the E. E. Root High School varsity basketball team finally won a game. The Bears rolled over Cuyahoga Hts. for the first win in a really long time. Coach Denny Kushlak hoped it would be, “the beginning of a new streak, a winning streak.” The win was such an overwhelming shock the Recorder reporter neglected to indicate the final score! You could have your best shoes last and last because you could take them to a shoe repairman. Craftsman Nick Popa did the shoe repairs for North Royalton’s Myers Dry Cleaning. January 1971, the city plans for growth. North Royalton is quickly losing the look of a farming community. New businesses, new housing, new residents; all needed appropriate zoning, services and community amenities. January 28 issue of the Recorder had a page two report of the grand opening of the new Dairy Dell on the corner of Royalwood and State Road. Dairy Dell specialized in fresh ice cream, dairy products and luncheon meats. Not to be out done, Lawson’s on Royalton Road improved their look and expanded their store space. Three pets perish in Drake Road fire
On Monday, February 22, the North Royalton Fire Department was dispatched to a call at 2:26 a.m. to a fire at 12666 Drake Road. It was reported that the fire was fully engulfing the garage and a portion of the house, which was attached by a breezeway. Mutual aid was also called from Broadview Heights, Brunswick and Strongsville. Since there was a large propane tank on the property, residents were evacuated. The power lines were also on fire. School report cards are in
The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) released the second part of the district report cards in late February. The first portion was released in January. This portion of the report contained the results for the value-added scores, based on grades 4-8 math and reading, which was taken from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment for the 2014-15 school year.
