North Royalton Fire Department officials reported that the call came in at just after 9 a.m. According to Fire Chief, Bob Chegan, the fire started in the living room, traveled up the stairwell into the second floor. He said that there was major damage in the kitchen. “The fire was quickly contained to the room of origin by Engine 2’s crew, who were able to knock it down with the tank water on board their engine. The occupant was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center.” The resident suffered from smoke inhalation and minor inhalation burns. Three other condominiums were affected with smoke damage, according to Chegan
Mutual aid was given to the North Royalton Fire Department by the Strongsville, Parma, and Middleburg Heights Fire Departments. The Fire Investigation Unit of the Southwest Emergency Response Team (SERT FIU) was requested to help with the investigation of this fire. The SERT FIU is comprised of fire rescue professionals from twenty Cuyahoga County, Ohio communities and organizations. According to SERT FIU officials, “Fire investigation, sometimes referred to as origin and cause investigation, is the analysis of fire-related incidents. After firefighters extinguish a fire, an investigation is launched to determine the origin and cause of the fire or explosion. Investigations of such incidents require a systematic approach and knowledge of basic fire science.”
