New scams to keep on your radar

Area police and the Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s Office are warning residents about some recent scams. The local scammers may be appearing right at your front door. The other scams are regarding online scams. Recently, the Strongsville Police reported that there was a suspicious white pickup truck with Georgia license plates. They pulled into a driveway in the area of Boston Road and asked the resident if he wanted an estimate to pave his driveway. Demolition of Old City Hall will change look of the City Green

At about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, the building that was once known as City Hall came tumbling down. The old City Hall is located on the City Green at the intersection of Rt 82, Bennett and Ridge Roads. The building was vacated in 2014, when the city’s administration moved to the old library building on State Road. Prior to the demolition, asbestos abatement on the structure took place, at a cost of about $24,000. The city estimated the cost of demolition to be about $200,000. Nick Margevicius begins pro baseball career with San Diego Padres

Nick Margevicius’ family has a new favorite baseball team. In the recent Major League Baseball Amateur draft, the San Diego Padres selected Nick, a left-handed pitcher from Rider University and from North Royalton, in the seventh round. Margevicius was the 198th player selected in the 2017 Draft. Nick’s baseball story can be traced all the way back to playing T-ball in the North Royalton Recreation League back in the early 2000s. “Nick played two years of T-Ball, one year of coach-pitch and three years of ‘Rec Ball’ before moving to travel ball,” said his dad Mark. Changes continue at the NR Police Dept.

The North Royalton Police Department has had some changes this year, from the top, down. With the retirement of Chief John Elek in March, Sergeant Ken Bilinovich was named new Chief. In addition, there have been some retirements in the department, which needed to be filled. Detective Flo Ann Rybicki was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. She has been with the North Royalton Police Department for over 20 years. She holds an AA degree from Cuyahoga Community College. Residents now have option of Texting 911

Anyone experiencing an emergency in Cuyahoga County can now Text 911. The program began on July 1. Although it is recommended to Call 911, in some cases, this additional option is now available. Cuyahoga is now one of a handful of counties in Ohio that offer this service. When calling 911 from a land line, the call goes directly to the Southwest Emergency Dispatch Center, which North Royalton is a part of. If calling 911 on a cell phone, or now texting 911 in North Royalton, the call will go to the Cuyahoga Emergency Communications System (CECOMS), where the dispatch will determine the locati ....

City eyes EMS levy for November ballot

City Council introduced two resolutions at its June 20 meeting needed in order to place a levy on the November 7 election. The five year, 1.7 mill EMS levy would replace the current 1.7 mill levy which expires at the end of 2018. If passed, the new levy will then take the place of the old levy. The new levy will raise taxes, as it will be a replacement, rather than a renewal. This would be the second time that this issue would be on the ballot. Graduates embark on a new chapter in their lives

Mom and two daughters found dead in Ridge Road home

Bodies of three females were found dead on Sunday, June 11, at 11489 Ridge Road, just north of Wallings Road. A 911 call came in at 7:58 p.m. Suzanne Taylor, 45, was found with her daughters, Taylor Pifer, 21, and Kylie Pifer, 19, in a bedroom, according to North Royalton Police Detective David Loeding. Earlier in the investigation, he said that the mother suffered knife wounds, but it wasn’t clear how the other two died. A knife was not found at the scene, according to Loeding. Royalton Woods Retirement Living residents partner with Valley Vista Kindergarten students for prehistoric exploration

Mrs. Leslie Bardwell’s kindergarten class at Valley Vista Elementary and the residents of Royalton Woods Retirement Living joined together for some prehistoric exploration and fun on May 24. Thanks to Kathleen Williams, Life Enrichment Coordinator at Royalton Woods, residents made dinosaur fossil eggs as part of their spring program.
