Council Continues Moratorium on Medical Marijuana Law

On February 7, City Council voted 6-1 in favor of extending the current six month moratorium for another six months. Ward 3 Councilman Dan Langshaw cast the only dissenting vote, stating that he felt the moratorium should be a year. Last June, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed House Bill 523 into law, making Ohio the 25th state to adopt a medical marijuana law. House Bill 523 passed by the Ohio House of Representatives last May 10, then passed in the Ohio Senate on May 24. Gabby White crosses 1,000 point mark

North Royalton senior forward Gabby White had no idea what was happening. The Lady Bears had just defeated Brecksville-Broadview Heights 58-40 on January 28. The players shook hands with one another and the crowd was still cheering. Cheryl Hannan picked as New Ward 5 Council Rep

The new appointment for the seat of Ward 5 Council Representative is Cheryl Hannan. She replaces Steve Muller, who resigned at the end of year, as he was planning to move out of the city. Council eyes future of Old City Hall

A decision is expected to be made on the fate of the old city hall, located on the City Green at the intersection of Rt 82, Bennett and Ridge Roads. The building was vacated in 2014, when the city’s administration moved to the old library building on State Road. Mayor Bob Stefanik said that the city has been seeking funding to rehabilitate the building, but there are no grants to be had. The City Green has gone through a series of changes since the inception of Royalton Township, which was established in 1818. Thankful Vet stationed in Okinawa sends care package home

Wally Ohler is used to sending boxes - lots of care packages to special people all over the world, 162 countries. Ohler has lots of friends; the VFW, American Legion, private citizens, school kids, moms and dads who help sending those boxes. The care packages can only be sent through the United States Post Office in specially made and marked boxes specifically labeled APO or FPO. The Army Post Office serves the Army and the Air Force and the Fleet Post Office serves the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. School Bond Issue slated for May 2 Ballot – School Board schedules open discussions and building tours

On Monday, January 23, the North Royalton Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution that would place a 30-year, 4.9 mill school bond issue on the May 2 ballot. The bond issue is in the amount of $88,900,000 and, if passed, will build one new elementary school to replace the three existing buildings, renovate as portion, demolish and build new at a portion of the high school and renovate the middle school. Community Meal program nears third year of sharing food, fellowship and blessings

The North Royalton Community Meal is approaching its third birthday. Fr. Edward Estok suggested the meal to The North Royalton Ministers’ Association in late 2013. Discussion and ideas were talked about at the meetings. January 2014 saw the pastors of the various flocks put the finishing touches on the proposal that would see the first Community Meal served on Sunday April 27, 2014. Turnpike noise wall to be completed this fall

Although the progress of the Ohio Turnpike Sound Wall Project has been delayed, the construction is still on target, expected to be completed later this year. City Engineer Mark Schmitzer said that he received notification last year that indicated that the bidding process for the project, which was originally scheduled to take place in June of last year, will be pushed to late summer/early fall, due to slope issues on the west bend. Two more local businesses are burglarized

Two more burglaries have taken place since the December 27 theft from Accurate Arms and Armor, located at 6834 Bunker Road. On January 3 a man and woman in their 40’s from Cleveland smashed the front doors of Discount Drug Mart, located at 5500 Wallings Road and stole cigarettes. Both appear to have lived together. Several days later, on January 8, the pair, and a 50-year-old man broke into the front door of Joe D’s Beverage, located at 5261 Wallings Road. At that location, they stole cigarettes and alcohol.
