The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) recently released the 2022 Ohio School Report Card for all districts in the state of Ohio. The State Report Card is one way to measure our educational system.
The data used by the ODE analyzes performance of each district and is broken down into six components: Achievement, Progress, Early Literacy, Gap Closing, Graduation and College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness.
Achievement: This component indicates the student’s performance on the State tests and how the student performed overall, as well as if they had met the State’s thresholds.
Progress: This component examines the growth of the students, based on their past performance.
Early Literacy: This component measures the improvement and proficiency of reading for those students in grades Kindergarten through Grade Three.
Gap Closing: This component measures the closing of educational gaps in student subgroups.
Graduation: This component examines the four-year and five-year graduation rates of specified groups.
College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness: This group examines student preparation for the future.
All but the last component is judged with a one to five star rating, which is based on the performance of the district. The measurements are designed to give both parents and the schools a representation of the quality of education that is provided to the students of that district. The rating scale is as follows: 5 stars, significantly exceeds state standards in academic achievement; 4 stars, exceeds state standards in academic achievement; 3 stars meets standards in academic achievement; 2 stars, needs support to meet state standards in academic achievement; 1 star, needs significant support to meet state standards in academic achievement.
Communication on the North Royalton School District was sent from Melissa Vojta, Assistant Superintendent and Jeffrey Cicerchi, Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, outlining the report for the North Royalton District, as follows:
Achievement (5 Stars) – The Achievement Component measures students’ academic achievement using each level of performance on Ohio’s State Tests.
Progress (4 Stars) – The Progress Component measures the academic performance of students compared to expected growth on Ohio’s State Tests.
Gap Closing (5 Stars) – The Gap Closing component shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for our students in English language arts, math, and graduation. It also measures how schools are doing in supporting English learners to increase language proficiency, reducing chronic absenteeism for all students, and identifying gifted students and providing gifted services.
Graduation (4 Stars) – The Graduation Component is a measure of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate.
Early Literacy (3 Stars) – The Early Literacy Component is a measure of reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade.
College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness (Not rated this year) – The College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness Component measures how well-prepared Ohio’s students are for all future opportunities.
