The weather held out with no rain or snow, but the 26-degree temperature really could be felt. That did not stop residents from bundling up and coming to the City Green on Sunday, December 1, to take part in the 23rd Annual Lighting of the Green. Residents came with their children to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate served by members of the North Royalton Lions Club, and indulge in free pastries, donated by Bimbo Bakeries USA.
Shortly after 5 p.m., you could see the NRPD Color Guard marching down Ridge Road, followed by the NRHS Flag Corp and Drumline. You could also hear the wailing siren of the North Royalton fire engine get louder as it came closer. In the bright red and shiny truck was a very special passenger, Santa Claus, arriving in style. Down the truck he went, making his way to the Gazebo, where he was joined by Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz, who welcomed everyone and invited the children to come up and help with the countdown of the lighting.
The North Royalton High School Choir beautifully sang a few Christmas carols and then the Drumline performed a few numbers for everyone’s enjoyment.
Children have a chance until December 15 to send their Letters to Santa with their holiday wish list to the North Pole in a special mailbox which is by the front door at Fire Station. They also wanted to personally tell Santa what they wished for in their stocking. After their visit with Santa in the little red house, a volunteer gave each child a free gift and chocolate bar from Malley’s Chocolates of North Royalton.
This 23rd Annual Holiday Lighting is a tradition of bringing the community together to usher in the Christmas season.
