The Royalton Recorder was started by Dr. George Rosenbaum in 1941. It began as the newsletter for the North Royalton Chamber of Commerce to inform the members of upcoming events. Some of the member businesses wanted to advertise in the newsletter and eventually it grew into a newspaper. It faltered somewhat during the war years, but after the war Dr. Rosenbaum returned and with the help of others, the paper got back on its feet. The Recorder was published once a month until 1965, when it started publishing twice a month as it still is today. It is published by the Chamber of Commerce and is non-partisan, non-sectarian.

From its inception through the 70s, the Recorder was produced mostly on a volunteer basis. Through the years, it grew in size as the population of North Royalton grew. The paper was distributed on foot but there were some problems reaching every residence, so in the early 90’s, the decision was made to change over U.S. Mail delivery to ensure everyone received it every time.

Since the Recorder is a free newspaper, at the time of the changeover to mail delivery an appeal was made to the residents of the community to help defray the costs of the printing and mailing. They were asked for a volunteer subscription donation of $15 once a year to help offset these high costs. The residents saw the immense value of their community newspaper and responded kindly to the appeal. Our yearly subscription drive is held in April. Every resident who subscribes is entered into a drawing to win a very nice prize.

Today the Recorder has a circulation of 16,000. In addition to EVERY HOME AND BUSINESS in town, it is mailed to the portion of Broadview Heights that is in the North Royalton school district, and to those out of town who subscribe. There are subscribers all over the country and some outside the U.S. as well. Most are residents who moved away and want to keep in touch with their hometown news.

The Recorder is a true community newspaper. We provide information about our city and its residents. We keep you informed, updated and entertained. We feel the Recorder is the hub of the city.  Some of the columns you’ll find in the Recorder are: Town Hall Topics, School Board News, Senior Scene, Police Beat, What’s Happening, Round Royalton, The Arts, Royalton Sports, Table Talk, Health Notes, and Club & Organizations. In addition, there are bridal announcements, baby announcements, death notices. Middle and high school students love to see their name in the Recorder when they make the Honor Roll.  You’ll find special features, puzzles with prizes in every issue, advertising specials, and an extended classified section. Our residents read it cover to cover and keep it until the next issue is delivered. That’s probably why we were voted the Best Community Newspaper in Northeast Ohio by the Neighborhood and Community Press Association three years in a row. It’s the Heart of our Hometown.
