The North Royalton Board of Education held their October meeting on Monday, October 8.
Melissa Vojta, Director of Curriculum, gave a presentation of the school district’s report card.
At the October 8 North Royalton Board of Education meeting, Board members and administrators recognized various students and staff from all five buildings for their commitment to excellence, whether it be through academics, arts, athletics, community service or for exhibiting core values.
Fourth grade students from the three elementary schools talked about their experience from the North Royalton Middle School Spirit Game at Serpentini Stadium, where they were bused from each building to the stadium to watch the seventh-grade football team win their game against Nordonia Middle School.
Linda Nickell, a paraprofessional at North Royalton Middle School for 23 years, was recognized for receiving the Northeast Regional Award by the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA). “The most important quality that Linda has is empathy, no matter who the student is, with or without a disability, she is there for each and every student in the same way,” said Principal Jeff Cicerchi, North Royalton Middle School. “She is compassionate about helping students whether it is with academics or personal life struggles. She will sit, lend an ear and provide wisdom or encouragement to help those around her find the strength to be successful. Linda leaves a lasting imprint on the hearts of her students, who continue to see her as a mentor and as a friend, even after graduation.”
North Royalton High School junior, Colin Rush was acknowledged for receiving a perfect score of 36 on the ACT test. Fewer than .14 percent of the nearly two million students who take the ACT obtain that score.
The Board approved the Fiscal Year 2019 Five-Year Forecast. They also approved the following 2018-19 appropriation adjustment: 003 Permanent Improvement Fund from $1,101,515.26 to $1,201,515.26. A $100,000.00 increase.
School Superintendent, Greg Gurka said that through House Bill 318, the district has received about $22,500 to be used for training in the area of safety and security, through Julie Bogden’s office of Pupil Services for training in mental health to identify students in crisis. He said that Bogden is currently researching programs in this area. Gurka then reported that “construction is moving along. The road behind the High School should be complete the beginning of November. The HVAC will be fired up at the Middle School on October 16. Right now we are working on preparing for ground breaking at the High School, which will happen over spring break.”
The Board approved an amended agreement with PSI Affiliates, Inc./PSI Associates, Inc. for the 2018-19 school year for auxiliary services at St. Albert the Great from $333,213.08 to $331,147.76 and appoint Julie Bogden as administrator. Services are for two registered nurses, speech/language pathologist, school psychologist, counselor, remedial teacher and intervention specialist, and clerk.
The Board approved the following agreements: Music Therapy Enrichment Center Inc. for music therapy services for the 2018-19 school year; LLA Therapy for the services of a registered nurse and a licensed practical nurse from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019; Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities for technical support team services with prior written referral from the District effective January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019.
The Board recognized the retirement of Donald Bazzo.
The Board approved a change of assignments, effective 2018-19 school year for as indicated:
Roger Force/from Middle School Utility Custodian to Head High School Cleanin Custodian, effective October 9, 2018.
Scott Matusik/from Head High School Cleaning Custodian to High School Assistant Building Custodian, effective October 9, 2018.
Cynthia Sostakowski/from Cleaner II-Valley Vista to Utility Custodian-Valley Vista, effective October 9, 2018
The Board approved the following supplemental contracts for the 2018-19 school year, as needed, salary on schedule:
Nathan Dick/Middle School Girls Basketball Coach, Joseph Francescangeli/High School Head Track Coach, Jessica Granger/Middle School Stand Club Advisor, Marguerite Greenlee/Resident Educator Mentor, Janice Mertens/Albion Math Club Advisor, Mary Moroney/Middle School Girls Basketball Coach, Kathryn Schultz/High School STEM/Science Olympiad Club Advisor, Nahlon White II/High School Girls Assistant Basketball Coach.
The Board approved the District’s participation as a member of the HPS, LLC Cooperative Purchasing Program and pay the program fee for public school district/non-public school membership.
The Board authorized the Ohio Schools Council Cooperative School Bus Purchasing Program to advertise and receive bids on behalf of the North Royalton Board of Education for the purchase of school buses as needed. The Ohio Schools Council has waived the fee for this service for 2018.
The Board authorized the administration to resurface the track using a Beynon product (the current track manufacturer) and to use consortium pricing, as permitted by the Ohio Revised Code.
The Board accepted the following gifts/donations:
“-Swings-N-Things donated 100 mini golf passes, 52 hours of unlimited game play passes, 27 Karts Plus passes and six season passes to the PBIS program at North Royalton Middle School.
-Royalton Woods donated 12-15 reams of paper, valued at $100, to Valley Vista Elementary.
-The North Royalton Soccer Club donated $250 to each to North Royalton High School, Albion Elementary, Royal View Elementary and Valley Vista Elementary, for use of the fields this past year.
-Tom & Chee donated free kids meal coupons to the PBIS programs at Albion Elementary, Royal View Elementary, Valley Vista Elementary and North Royalton Middle School.
-The Consiglio family donated $150 to both the North Royalton High School STACK group and the North Royalton Middle School Coffee Club in memory of their daughter Antoinette.
-Taco Bell donated 500 taco coupons to the PBIS program at Valley Vista Elementary.
