The March meeting of the North Royalton Board of Education took place on Monday, March 11.
The following building presentations were given:
Royal View and Valley Vista Elementary: The Board recognized the Bears Den class meetings taking place in our elementary schools throughout the year, which are a part of the bully prevention program, which started with the 2015-16 school year. The meetings are held to build class and community cohesion, teach rules and consequences and assist students in understanding their role in situations where bullying exists. Four Royal View Elementary fourth grade students, Alexis Habak and Christopher Farren and third graders Brianna Jacin and Addison O’Shaughnessy, shared their thoughts about the Bears Den.
Jaiden Hurley-Belardo, a Valley Vista second-grader, was recognized for an idea she had to create buddy chairs for indoor recess during the winter months. The bench was created to help eliminate loneliness and fosters friendship. “Jaiden continues to demonstrate very creative and higher-level thinking,” said Principal, Jeff Hill. “She took an idea that would have a positive influence and impact on students within the building and brought it to life. She was more than willing to take her initial idea and present it to me, her teacher and her fellow classmates. Students were positive and enthusiastic in their responses when asked their thoughts of Jaiden’s idea. Classes have started working to implement the indoor Buddy Bench into the classrooms right now.”
North Royalton Middle School: Seventh-grade student Soham Shah placed second in the Ohio School Energy Challenge by creating a video/pictures to showcase how everyday tasks are accomplished with petroleum-based products. He earned $250 in prize money and asked that the money be used for the NRMS Science Olympiad Team and by the seventh-grade science teachers.
North Royalton School Superintendent reported that he was very impressed with the performances in the recent production of Zombie Prom, presented by the North Royalton High School Spotlighters. “The kids really just did a great job.” He talked about the great ending of the winter sports programs. “It really was a successful winter season.” He then talked about the upcoming construction and noted that this will be the last time we use the community room for the monthly School Board meetings. He noted that most future Board meetings will take place at Royalview Elementary School, except for those held in the summer months, where they will be held at the Board office.
