A North Royalton Police officer was stabbed and the perpetrator shot after police tried to issue a probate order on Friday, October 28.
Two members of the North Royalton Police Department and an EMS squad arrived at the 9800 block of Independence Place condominiums at 7:04 p.m. to issue the order, which dictated that they take the 45-year-old male to St. Vincent Charity Hospital for psychiatric observation. “The arrest became unruly, combative,” said North Royalton Police Detective, David Loeding. “The subject withdrew a knife, I believe, from his person and stabbed one of the officers in the face and in the leg.”
When the officer was stabbed, the second officer fired shots at the male, who was then transported to University Hospital Parma Medical Center, where he was confirmed dead. The officer that was stabbed was taken to MetroHeath Medical Center, where he was treated and released the following day. Loeding said that the officer’s injuries are “serious, but not life threatening.” He is currently on medical leave.
“The officer who fired the shots has been placed on administrative leave, according to policy protocol,” said Loeding. The matter is being investigated by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department in tandem with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).
