For the first time in more than two decades, North Royalton High School’s Royal Harmony has achieved a “1” Superior Rating at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Adjudicated Contest—marking a milestone moment for the ensemble and its long tradition of excellence.
The prestigious rating represents the highest honor awarded at the state level and reflects months of dedication, preparation, and musical growth by the student performers. Royal Harmony delivered a powerful and expressive performance that showcased not only their vocal talent, but also their deep connection to the music.
An OMEA Adjudicated Contest is a comprehensive evaluation designed to support educational growth, emphasizing music literacy, technical skill, and the rehearsal process. Ensembles are assessed on prepared selections as well as sight-reading, challenging students to demonstrate both preparation and musicianship in real time.
“It has been truly beneficial for our students to follow this steadfast process and succeed in all elements—both their prepared pieces and sight reading,” said Director of Choirs Sydney Jahnigen. “After receiving incredible feedback at the district level, Royal Harmony was able to push past their potential and broaden their music-making to achieve these high marks. They were connected to their pieces on many levels, which made for a passionate performance. I couldn’t be more proud.”
Royal Harmony’s program featured a diverse and moving repertoire, including “Soon We Will Be Done,” “Ubi Caritas,” and “Like a River in My Soul,” each performed with artistry and emotion.
This Superior Rating marks the group’s first such achievement in 23 years, highlighting a significant accomplishment for North Royalton City Schools and reinforcing the strength of its music education program.

NRHS Bands Make History with Unprecedented Superior Ratings at State Event

North Royalton High School has achieved a remarkable milestone in music education, earning statewide recognition for the excellence of its band program. The school is one of only two in Ohio to have four bands qualify for the OMEA State Finals Adjudicated Event, and the only high school in the state where all four ensembles received the highest possible rating.
Following the OMEA Northeast Region State Band Adjudicated Event held April 24-25, each of North Royalton’s bands (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Freshman Band) earned a Superior (1) rating, a distinction that reflects exceptional musical performance and technical achievement.
“This weekend showcases the result of hard work, effort, practice, dedication, and intense rehearsals all year long for the band program,” said Director of Bands David Vitale.”
Adjudicated by music professionals through the Ohio Music Education Association, the event evaluates ensembles on musicality, technique, tone quality, and overall performance. Receiving a Superior rating is the highest distinction awarded and signifies excellence across all judging categories.
This historic accomplishment highlights not only the talent of North Royalton’s student musicians, but also their commitment, discipline, and passion for the performing arts. It stands as a testament to the strength of the district’s music program and the supportive community behind it.
