Chamber marks 100 years of service – The Early Years 1944 – 1950

The Royalton Recorder carried a feature called “Sally’s Letters to G. I. Joe.” It was a little corner of the front page. Some bits and pieces of news from Royalton, just enough to clip and tuck in a letter to the fathers, brothers, and sons that were fighting in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific on their way to Japan. By the end of 1944 there was renewed hope that the war would end, “soon.” Still, there was a lot of fighting ahead. Dr. J. G. Children brave the freezing cold in hunt of Easter eggs

Mother Nature can’t stop the Easter Bunny. Despite frigid 30-degree temperatures and bursts of cold wind gusts, hundreds of children lined Memorial Park on March 25 for the annual North Royalton Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt. Dressed more for a day of playing outside in the snow, the children were sent into the fenced-in playground area in increments of 30 to dash around collecting colorful eggs hidden by members of the North Royalton High School Key Club. Union contracts with city have stalled

Although the city continues to negotiate with its various unions, the Firefighters Union negotiations have been stalled. All of the city’s union contracts expired on December 31, 2017. City to offer new recycling option

The city has entered into an agreement that will offer another recycling option for residents. In addition to its current recycling program, residents will now be able to add “soft recyclables” to the items they can recycle weekly. The city currently collects recycling through Rumpke Waste and Recycling, who also handles the city’s rubbish removal. Starting last spring, Rumpke provided 64-gallon bins to pick up co-mingled recycling items that include plastic bottles and jugs, cartons, metal cans, cardboard, paper and glass bottles and jars. Being military friendly earns St. Albert the Great the Purple Star Award

St. Albert the Great Elementary School is one of 44 schools in the State of Ohio, and two in Cuyahoga County, to receive the Purple Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education. Bennett Road path to be extended

The Bennett Road path will now be completed, extending from South Akins to the Valley Parkway. The extension will take place with a grant award to the city from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA). The original portion of the path was installed when Bennett Road was reconstructed in 2012. The original path was constructed from asphalt, is eight feet wide and is located on the west side of Bennett Road. Basketball season ends for Royalton Bears

The basketball season for the boys and girls ended too quickly for both North Royalton varsity teams. Both the boys and the girls won games in the State Tournament, leading fans to believe that the future looks bright for North Royalton on the basketball floor. The boys’ team won their opening game in the State Tournament, defeating Lincoln West out of the Cleveland Senate Athletic League 77-44. Valley Vista Elementary Student Council thanks community members with treats and cards

Student Council members from Valley Vista Elementary have been thanking community members for their service for several years and 2018 is no exception. In the past, they have sent cards or invited community members to breakfast, but each year is a little different. On March 15, Student Council provided breakfast treats and thank you cards to the North Royalton police and fire departments. The theme for this act of appreciation was “Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes.” Student Council members voted to use some of the group’s funding to purchase treats. Florida school shooting prompts more talk of safety

School Safety has come to the forefront of discussion again after a recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people. The discussion has expanded to include the participation of students. About 200 North Royalton High School Students participated in a student-organized walkout on Wednesday, March 14.
