On September 23, North Royalton Police Officer Jason Kimmel was named the 2020 North Royalton City Schools’ Friend of Education. This annual award goes to a person or persons who significantly contribute to North Royalton City Schools, help inspire and empower students, and dedicate themselves to making North Royalton and Broadview Heights great places. He was surprised in front of his family and city and school officials at North Royalton City Hall.
At the beginning of the 2014 school year, North Royalton City Schools and the North Royalton Police Department began a program that provided the opportunity for off-duty officers to help patrol and be on the grounds at North Royalton City Schools’ elementary buildings. The purpose of the program was to not only consult with the office staff about any new security concerns, but also to provide visibility in the school community by mingling with students and staff, usually during the lunch and recess hours.
“Elementary staff members have loved this partnership over the past six school years, as it is always a memorable day when students get the chance to interact with the officers,” said Principal Kirk Pavelich, Royal View Elementary. “Over the years, one in particular has made a lasting impact on our students, as it is truly the highlight of their day when this officer and his smiling face enters our cafeterias or walks on to the playgrounds. For the students, it’s like a local celebrity has visited their school and is eager to spend time building relationships with them.”
“Officer Kimmel is well known by all the students throughout the elementary buildings for the drawings and caricatures he often displays for the students in our gymnasiums during the lunch periods,” said Principal Jeff Hill, Valley Vista Elementary. “He thoroughly enjoys being with the students throughout his stops at the buildings.”
“He is passionate about his position and takes genuine interest in each and every student and staff member,” said Principal Vince Ketterer, Albion Elementary.
“Officer Jason Kimmel is this year’s North Royalton Friend of Education for his efforts in fully embracing this program and the partnership it has enhanced between our schools and the police department,” said Superintendent Greg Gurka, North Royalton City Schools. “Thank you to Officer Kimmel for truly making a difference in the lives of our students!”
