Graduates have no Prom but a special After Prom

At a typical North Royalton High School After Prom event, a few lucky seniors go home with prizes donated by the community, but as we all know, this year has been anything but typical. Prom may have been canceled, but After Prom, the fun-filled event held afterwards at Strongsville’s Walter F. Ehrnfelt, Jr. Recreation Center that features games, music, catered food and loads of prizes, went on in a much different and most impressive fashion, thanks to one mom who makes it a point to always find the positive. Honoring the special fathers in our lives

Father’s Day is coming up on June 21, and if you think about it, dads are kind of the original social distancers and enjoy their space. Growing up, I’d ask my mom, “Where’s dad?” and she’d spout out a variety of responses that align perfectly with the world we’re currently living in: “He’s out in the yard,” “He went golfing,” “He’s reading that new Stephen King book,” “He’s making a fire,” “He’s taking a nap,” “He’s in the garage,” “He’s working on the insert-name-of-machine-here,” “He’s fixing that old insert-name-of-broken-appliance-h ....

Fly ‘Old Glory’ with pride on Flag Day, June 14

Each year, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14, which, this year, is a Sunday. Although it may have lost some of its popularity, its representational spirit may come back to the forefront. Flying the flag has always been thought to be a wonderful symbol of patriotism. In 1777 on that date, the Second Continental Congress, which was meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the Flag Act of 1777, which created the official flag for our nation, which was in the midst of struggle in order to gain its independence from Britain. That flag, which was comprised of thirteen stripes of red and white and thirteen ....

A graduation to be remembered long into a ‘distant’ future

It may not have been what they expected, but in a true show of maturity and forward-thinking, members of the North Royalton High School Class of 2020 embraced their chance to walk across the Dan Calabrese Center for the Performing Arts stage and take hold of their coveted diplomas. After all, as student speaker Ethan Butler pointed out, this is the same group of young people who were born into a 9/11 world, began their early academic careers amidst a financial crisis and wrapped up their public schooling as a worldwide pandemic unfolded and snuffed out everyday life. “It (the great pandemic ....
